How to download your DNA kit from AncestryDNA,
23&Me, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA and LivingDNA
AncestryDNA
Log into your Ancestry account and go to your DNA page: https://www.ancestry.com/dna
Click on “Settings” in the upper right hand corner of the page
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to the “Actions” section. Next to “Download
Raw DNA Data”, click the link that says “Download”, enter your password, check the box to
agree to the terms and then click on “Confirm”
Then you’ll see this message: “Almost there…Please check your inbox for an email from us.
Then follow the instructions to begin your download.”
Check your email. When it arrives, the subject line will read “Your request to download
AncestryDNA raw data”. Open the email and click on the blue “Confirm Data Download” button.
The link will lead you to the “Download DNA Raw Data” page.
Click on the green “Download DNA Raw Data” button and you’ll get a pop up asking to save the
.zip file to your computer (ex. dna-data-2020-08-12.zip). Make sure that it’s saved somewhere
(like your desktop) so that you can easily locate it when it’s time to upload the .zip file.
23&Me
Sign in at 23&Me and then go here: https://you.23andme.com/tools/data/
On that screen you’ll see this on top: “Your Raw Data. Search for specific genes and markers
(SNPs) of interest.* You can view or download your data at any time in its raw, uninterpreted
format (your A’s, T’s, G’s, and C’s).” Notice that “download” is hyperlinked? Click on that link and
it will lead you to the “Download Raw Data” page.
On the “Download Raw Data” page, please read the “Important warnings to consider” section
and then scroll down to the “Request your raw data download” section. Check the box next to “I
understand the limitations and risks associated with uploading my information to third party
sites.” and then click on the blue “Submit request” button.
You should now see this message: “Your download request is in progress. On August 12th, you
submitted a request to download your raw data. When your raw data download is ready, we will
send you an email to the email address linked to this account.”
Check your email. When it arrives, the subject line will read “Your 23andMe raw data download
is ready!” Open the email and click on the green “Download Raw Data” button.
The link will lead you to the “Download Raw Data” page.
Click on the blue “Download raw data” button and you’ll get a pop up asking to save the .zip file
to your computer (ex. genome_Catherine_Smith_v3_Full_20200812112852.zip). Make sure that
it’s saved somewhere (like your desktop) so that you can easily locate it when it’s time to upload
the .zip file.
FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA)
Sign in at FamilyTreeDNA and then go to this link: https://www.familytreedna.com/my/family-finder/downloads.
This will bring you to the “Family Finder – Downloads” page.On the “Family Finder – Downloads” page, make sure you read all the information in the “Read
before you download” section first and then click on “Build 37 Autosomal Raw Data (GZIP,
CSV)” option. If there is different build data, always choose the “autosomal raw data” option.
After you click on the autosomal DNA download option, you’ll get a pop up asking to save the file
to your computer (ex. YourKitNumber_Autosomal_o37_Results_20200812.csv.gz). Make sure
that it’s saved somewhere (like your desktop) so that you can easily locate it when it’s time to
upload the file.
MyHeritage
Sign in at MyHeritage and then go to this link: https://www.myheritage.com/dna/manage.
This will bring you to the “Manage DNA kits” page.On the “Manage DNA kits” page, click on the three grey vertical dots next to your kit and choose
“Download”. A window will pop up, “Learn more about DNA files”, with information on what you
are about to download. Click the purple “Continue” button.
On the next popup, “Confirmation for downloading raw DNA data”, you will be asked to accept
the MyHeritage Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy, then click the purple “Continue” button
and an email will be sent to your registered email address.
Check your email. When it arrives, open the email and click on the purple “Click here to
continue with the download” hyperlink. You will be redirected to the MyHeritage site where you
will need to then enter your password and click the purple “Download” button.
After you click the “Download” button, you’ll get a pop up asking to save the file to your
computer. Make sure that it’s saved somewhere (like your desktop) so that you can easily locate
it when it’s time to upload the file.
LivingDNA
Log in to LivingDNA: https://my.livingdna.com/signin.
On your dashboard, click on the “DNA Profiles” link on the dark blue menu on the left-hand side
of the screen. This will bring you to the “DNA Profiles” page.
On the “DNA Profiles” page, click the blue download icon next to your kit and that will lead you to
the “Download raw data” page. Be sure to read the information on the page before proceeding.
At the bottom of the screen, click on the check box under the “Consent” section and then two
download options will appear. From there, click on the dark blue “Download autosomal (family
ancestry) raw marker data” button.
After you click on the download option, you’ll get a pop up asking to save the file to your computer (ex.
autosomal.txt). Make sure that it’s saved somewhere (like your desktop) so that you can easily locate it
when it’s time to upload the file.
